What kind of coaxial cable splitter should one use with Time Warner digital cable and Road Runner high speed internet services? We currently have Time Warner digital cable, cable phone and broadband internet services in our house. During a trial and error approach, I have come to the conclusion that 5Mhz to 2Ghz splitters tend to work the best. Currently we split our cable service coming into the house two ways, with a high definition television in one room and the telephony/cable internet modem in another room.
In the process of trying to obtain the best digital signal for my cable internet services while retaining the highest quality picture possible (via coaxial line) for our high definition television, the following is what I have found.
Non recommended coax splitters for digital services
- Phillips Magnavox PM61001 900 MHZ 3 way splitter. The first splitter I tried resulted in constantly dropped internet connections, intermittent loss of phone connection and poor picture quality on our HD TV. I quickly removed this unit and tossed it in the trash.
- RCA D800 2 way 40-2150MHZ splitter. The second unit I tried seemed to work decent with the exception of what I consider slightly poor picture quality. The dropped internet and phone connections were now a thing of the past.
- RCA D810 40-2150MHZ 4 way splitter - Same as the above unit, except a four way version. Performance difference, if any, was not perceivable.
Recommended coax splitters for digital services
- Monster 2 Way 2 GigaHertz RF Splitter. Offering both improved picture quality and no more dropped cable services, this is the unit I ended up using.
- Acoustic Research PR431 High Performance 2.5 GHZ, 3 way splitter. A great overall value. Cheaper than the Monster at roughly the same specs, but very hard to find in stock. Couldn't test this unit due to unavailability.
